COMMERCIAL - MILITARY ANTENNAS

Welcome to the Commercial Section of Mosley Electronics, Inc.

ENGINEERING ASSISTANCE FOR SPECIAL PROBLEMS

The name meaning TOP QUALITY in communication and receiving antennas is Mosley. Mosley commercial antennas offer you little (if any) maintenance, outstanding performance, and economy. All antennas are developed to meet rigid government and military specifications for quality control.

At the Mosley factory, trained, skilled personnel produce a full line of antennas. Coil forms used in our beams are molded directly on the element sections. Traps stay on frequency in steaming jungles and deserts; in polar regions. Swaging of element sections creates a more attractive antenna, reduces wind load, eliminating possible vibrations causing metal fatigue. The Mosley "Quality of Antenna Excellence" has become a standard to the industry. Every Mosley installation is designed using only the finest quality materials, backed by over 65 years of antenna design and manufacturing skills.

In addition to the information posted herein, Mosley Electronics, Inc. can produce a wide variety of multi-frequency YAGIS, Verticals and Dipoles as well as other single and multi-frequency configurations to meet specific requirements.

You are cordially invited to submit your antenna problem to our competent engineering staff. Prompt evaluations and proposals will be made along with price quotations and delivery times.

Whether your requirement can be met by one of our cataloged antennas or by a CUSTOM - ENGINEERED "SYSTEM", Mosley Electronics, Inc. is anxious to serve you.

GROUND PLANE ANTENNASGround Plane Antennas

GROUND PLANE ANTENNAS FOR  25 TO 470 MHz

360° PATTERN
Mosley 360° Ground Plane Antennas are exceptionally effective in base station installations working with mobiles. Polarization is vertical and a low angle radiation is achieved through use of  horizontal radials and a unique "modified gamma" feed system.  VSWR is held to less than 1.5/1 at resonant frequency.   The radiating element is grounded, providing a static drain path to ground with consequent improvement in signal-to-noise ratio.  This feature also gives a considerable degree of lightning protection to the system.  Power rating of each Mosley is established by the rating of the coax and fittings at the frequency involved.   These antennas have a 50/52 ohm feed point impedance.  Mosley Ground Planes are 100% rust proof.  Elements are made of drawn aircraft grade tubing and the hardware stainless steel and other non-corrosive fasteners.  When ordering specify the frequency and power needed.  Antennas are factory-cut to frequency.

HEAVY DUTY BASE MOUNT
Mosley Ground Plane Antennas feature a sturdy base mount especially designed to provide rigid, no-guyed support. Ribteed component is molded of "cycolac" and incorporates a coax fitting pre-assembled to the unit.  The base plate is 6061-T6 aluminum mounted on a cast aluminum flange which fits over a mast pipe. Ground Plane radials bolt securely to the base plate.

VERTICAL GROUND PLANE ANTENNA 27 to 50 MHzMosley "Dispatcher"

The "DISPATCHER", DP-275

The DP-275 Dispatcher is a 5/8 wave vertical ground plane antenna with an exceptionally low angle of radiation and is designed and manufactured to fulfill the exact antenna requirements for commercial communications. It incorporates a shunt match feed with 50 ohm impedance rated to 1,000 watts and a nominal 1.5 or less VSWR at the resonant frequency. The Mosley "DP-275" offers a 3.4 gain over a standard ground plane antenna. This antenna is grounded for lightning protection which also reduces rain and snow static.

This Top-quality antenna is weather protected via the UG-58/U female type "N" and the UG-21-B/U male connector. The coax female connector is part of the weatherproof radial support assembly.

6063-T832 aluminum alloy tubing with high tensile strength makes this antenna the durable antenna desired for commercial use.

The vertical element of this DP-275 telescopes into a wrapped phenolic base tube which has a greater strength than the aluminum element. Radials (horizontal elements) terminate into a high strength "cycolac" base which has again, more strength than the aluminum element.

Antenna mounting is simplified: just mount the antenna on a mast, tighten two screws, and lock nuts. All hardware is of stainless steel or steel-plated to meet government specifications.

This vertical ground plane has swaged (tapering ends of aluminum tubing) designed to reduce wind load and any possibility of vibrations which could cause metal fatigue.

When ordering the DP-275, please indicate the frequency and power required.

LOG PERIODICS

HF LOG PERIODICS Mosley ALP-6-30-48

The New Mosley Lightweight Series of MLP log periodics gives you a broad frequency range in a manageable antenna. The new Mosley design gives you 50 years of Mosley ruggedness in a lighter weight design than other traditional LP's.

These antennas will cover their frequency range under 2:1. The power handling capabilities are up to 10,000 watts. While being hundreds of pounds lighter than other log periodics, these antennas will survive a 100 mile per hour wind with a 1/4" of radial ice.

These antennas also cut down on the size of tower, rotor, and other hardware normally required. The assembly time is quicker and can be easily installed in the field, without the huge equipment that the traditional logs have required.

MLP-3-30 Frequency 3 to 30 MHz

The MLP-3-30 is capable of transmitting from 3MHz to 30 MHz. This antenna is basically capable of receiving from the broadcast frequencies up beyond 30 MHz. Its lighter weight design allows the same coverage as heavier logs, but at many hundreds of pounds less weight. Even though the MLP-3-30 is lighter it will survive the same conditions as heavier models. This unique Mosley design gives you the best of both worlds, great broad band performance and strength, while making installation an easier task.

MLP-4-30 Frequency 4 to 30 MHz

The MLP-4-30 is built in the same manner as the MLP-3-30, the only difference is the frequency coverage and it is lighter than the MLP-3-30. This log will cover the majority of the frequencies you will need. And as with the MLP-3-30 the MLP 4-30 will receive several MHz out of its transmit range. The SWR on the MLP4-30 will give you a reliable 2:1 over it's frequency range.

MLP-6-30 Frequency 6 to 30 MHz

The MLP-6-30 is THE BIGGEST LITTLE log we make. It covers from 6 MHz through 30 MHz while only requiring a 40 foot Boom. This antenna is lighter and stronger than antennas which cover these frequencies. The MLP-6-3O will allow continuous tuning from 6 MHz to 30 MHz with the same performance as any other manufacturer's log. This antenna is designed to give you the MOST performance for the LEAST amount of money.

MLP-12-30 Frequency 12 to 30 MHz

The MLP-12-30 gives you the frequencies that are the most used with the least amount of effort. This antenna is the STRONGEST of its size and type. The unique MOSLEY design gives you ease of assembly and lightweight strength at a lower cost. This MLP-12-30 will survive a 150 m.p.h. wind with no radial ice and a 100 m.p.h. with a 1/4" of radial ice. This lightweight is 'HEAVY DUTY' allowing you to run in excess of 6 KW P.E.P and a continuous 4 KW.

FEATURES of the MOSLEY MLP SERIES

*No measuring. All pieces are pre-drilled and color-coded. Each element is individually made and color-coded Assembly is as easy as I, 2, 3.

*All hardware is Stainless Steel. This insures years of faithful service.

*The Mosley unique element mounting allows for extreme strength and allows the antenna to handle more power out than our competitors' log antennas.

*Lighter weight allows a smaller crew with less equipment to install the MLP series log.

*Due to the design of the MLP log, it has less square footage, which adds up to savings on the tower, and rotor used.

(NOTE: Mosley can custom make an MLP for frequencies not listed.   If you need a special frequency combination please contact our engineering department.)

VHF/UHF LOG PERIODICS

Mosley also has a NEW line of SPECIAL LOGS. These logs are designed for a special frequency range. The MLP-SERIES can be made to cover frequencies from 30 MHz to 1,200 MHz range.

This series of log antennas can cover a selected frequency range, with more gain, than the average log. These antennas can be made for a Fixed base station or a Portable installation. The MLP Series of antennas are lightweight, but stronger than other logs which operate in this frequency range.

As with all the Mosley antennas there is NO Measuring or adjusting. Even in our light-weight , smaller logs, our hardware is stainless steel, and our elements are made of aircraft-grade material.

MLP-30-100 Frequency 30 to 100 MHz

The MLP-30-100 is capable of transmitting from 30 MHz to 100 MHz. Its lighter weight design allows the same long life that you have come to expect from a Mosley antenna. Even though the MLP-30-100 is lighter, it will survive the same conditions as the heavier models.  This unique Mosley design gives you the best of both worlds, great broad band performance and strength, while making installation an easier error free task.

MLP-100-250 Frequency 100 to 250 MHz

The MLP-100-250 is built in the same manner as the MLP-30-100, the only difference is the frequency coverage and it is lighter than the MLP-30-100.  This log will cover the majority of the frequencies you will need.  And, as with the MLP-30- 100 the MLP-100-250 will receive several MHz out of it's transmit range.  The SWR on the MLP-100-250 will give you a reliable 2:1 over its' frequency range.

MLP-100-470 Frequency 100 to 470 MHz

The MLP-100-470 is one of the most versatile antennas made.   You can cover from aircraft through the business band on up into the high commercial military frequencies.  This antenna is unique in that Mosley MLP-100-470 is the only LOG ANTENNA in this frequency range. The MLP-100-470 will allow continuous tuning from 100 MHz to 470 MHz with the same performance as many dedicated antennas for these frequencies. This antenna is designed to give you the MOST performance over more of the popular frequencies for the LEAST amount of money.

MLP-30-12OO  Frequency 30 to 1,200 MHz

This antenna is a spiral array type log. It's elements gradually increase their angle along the boom giving you a VERTICAL and HORIZONTAL capability in one antenna. Not only can this antenna receive over a TREMENDOUS frequency range, it will also allow a more flexible use in working or copying mobile or fixed stations.  As with all Mosley antennas, the MLP-30-1200 is made with the same quality materials and assurances that you have come to expect with a Mosley.

MLP-100-1200 Frequency 100 to 1,200 MHz

The MLP-100-1200 is set in a straight plane on the boom.  It will give the end user a good performing antenna to cover just about any communication need between 100 and 1,200 MHz.  This antenna, as with other MLP models, comes with stainless steel hardware and drawn tubing and aircraft grade aluminum.

MLP-SPECIAL Frequency "A" to"Z"

These antennas are special because they can cover a range of frequencies that you choose.  If you wish to have a lower SWR and MORE gain in a smaller frequency range, we can make your log to cover just that area you desire. An example would be a good range of coverage in the aircraft band from 109 MHz to 135 MHz.

MULTI-FREQUENCY BEAMS

MULTI-FREQUENCY ANTENNAS FOR THE HF RANGE

Selection of an antenna is one of the most important considerations in the design of a radio system, because the antenna is the system's only connection to the conducting medium. For most systems, the antenna should have the highest efficiency consistent with the available space and a minimum of supports; which means it will have a directional pattern.

To avoid switching problems, the antenna should automatically adapt to changes in frequency and use a single transmission line.  If such an antenna is mounted on a single tower with a rotating device, it can replace three, four, or more separate antenna systems with their supports and transmission lines with associated switching and tuning devices. In many installations, a rotating multi-frequency yagi beam can be used in place of a long wire and log periodic antennas, at a considerable savings in cost and space requirements.  Multi-frequency high frequency antennas may be made in either vertical, dipole, or yagi beam types. Mechanical requirements usually limit beams to a low frequency limit of about 6 MHz, but dipoles and verticals may go down to about 2 MHz. An upper limit of about 30 MHz is imposed by the lumped parameters in the traps.

The basic principle for trap type multi-frequency antennas appeared in literature as early as 1940, but arrangements of trap isolators on antennas have only been generally accepted in recent years, first receiving acceptance by amateurs in tri-band beams for 14, 21, and 28 megahertz.  The success of these antennas led to the development of similar antennas for commercial services, for reception, and medium-power point-to-point transmission.

The operation of the trap antenna depends on the property of a parallel resonant circuit to assume high impedance only at or near resonance. Figure 1 shows a schematic of a three band dipole.  The length of section 1 is equal to a half wave length at the highest band to be used.  Parallel resonant circuits (A) and (A1) are then added at the ends of this section, these being resonant at the frequency for which 1 is resonant.  Operation at the next lower band is achieved by adding element sections so that the equivalent electrical length of section 2 (when the reactance introduced by the resonant circuits A and A1 is taken into account) corresponds to half wavelengths resonance for the next lower band.  These added sections are inoperative at the frequency for which section 1 is in resonance, since they are isolated by the high impedance of the circuits (A) and (A1). A third or more bands may be added in the same manner by adding resonant circuits as in (B) and (B1) and element sections so that 3 is an electrical half wavelength at the next lower band.   The same method may be used to make director and reflector elements for yagi beam antennas.  In any case, the antenna needs only one transmission line for all frequencies and automatically switches it's response when the frequency of the station equipment is switched.

Figure 1

Figure 1

TRAP ISOLATORS limit resonance of inner section to highest frequency, permits oscillation at lower frequency, or frequencies which are not necessarily harmonically related to the higher frequency.

Dipole, vertical, and beam antennas (up to three elements) may be satisfactorily fed from 52 ohm coaxial lines.  Vertical antennas consist of one-haIf the dipole using one-quarter wave resonant sections working against ground. Since the trap coils introduce reactance into the antenna element, some frequency separation between the working band widths must be allowed when designing these antennas.  A fair estimate of 200 Kilohertz band width at 30 Megahertz decreasing to about 50 Kilohertz at 2 Megahertz may be expected.

A typical example of an antenna of this type is a three element yagi beam for the reception of standard time and frequency station WWV on 10, 15 and 20 Megahertz.  The three elements are mounted on a 3" O.D. aluminum boom 20 feet long and all three elements operate on all three frequencies.   Forward gain over a dipole is approximately 7 dbd on 10 MHz and 8 dbd on 15 and 20 MHz. The held pattern is unidirectional with a front to back and front to side ratio better than 20 db.  Maximum element length is about 32 feet with a turning radius of 20 feet. The complete system weighs 200 pounds, has a wind load of 335 pounds and is capable of handling winds up to 150 m.p.h. without ice. Similar antennas have been produced for up to six frequency bands and handle transmitter output of 1000 watts continuous carrier or 4000 watts peak envelope power on single sideband emission.

The principal advantage of the trap antenna is it's small, sure, and multifrequency capability when compared to other multi-frequency antennas, such as a rhombic, "V", and log periodic type.  It does not have the extreme bandwidth of these types, but for spot frequency operation, where frequencies are permanently assigned, continuous frequency coverage is not necessary and may be undesirable.  Trap type beam antennas are much smaller than comparable log periodic antennas and have comparable gain and directivity.  Gains of rhombic and "V' antennas will run somewhat higher, but these antennas occupy large space and cannot be turned for use in more than one direction.  Two disadvantages of the trap antenna are that they have power limitation, due to trap currents, and that they cannot be used for all frequency combinations.

The trap type multi-frequency antenna has proven it's value in thousands of installations and is worthy of consideration in any HF system design.
